Tynedale Councillors from the Community Health & Culture and Environment Overview and Scrutiny Committees paid a visit to the factory this week and spent some more than 3 hours discussing the development and touring the plant. The background to the development was presented by Simon Dotlinger, Egger's Production and Technical Director, who described the advanced technical design. He also stated that a significant factor in the company choosing to build the new plant in Hexham, rather than elsewhere in the UK or Europe, was the skilled and reliable local workforce.

The new weighbridge became operational this week, this means wood chip delivery vehicles will enter the plant and turn left parallel to Anick Grange Road rather than to the right.

Complaints of lighting glare have been received affecting the Beaufront Avenue area of Hexham and also Anick.

In response to noise and other problems affecting residents near the factory a programme of improvements has been drawn up, which includes:

  • Replacement of filters to the dry chip air intake - completed
  • Instructions/procedures to prohibit vehicles reversing (deliveries and site vehicles) between 18:00 and 08:00 hours - completed
  • Stiffened and isolated mountings for dry chip vibrating conveyor equipment - completed
  • Further isolation of dry chip vibrating equipment - due completion end Feb 08
  • Extra air extraction to be provided for equipment in dry chip building - due completion end Feb 08
  • Changes to log handling operating procedures and staffing - due completion end Dec 07
  • Changes to acoustic warning alarm serving the dry chip building- due completion end Dec 07
  • Acoustic insulation of chain conveyors (dry chip building roof) - due completion end Dec 07
  • Additional acoustic sealing of the wet chip building - due completion end Feb 08
  • Alterations to log conveyor and adjacent building to contain noise - due completion end Feb 08
