There are a number of local issues that are of concern to Sandhoe residents.  High on the list are concerns about the Egger redevelopments, their impact on our environment and the threats posed by Tynedale Council's Site Allocations document which will have an effect on the way land is used in the parish in future years.

Whilst Egger appear to have undertaken a substantial amount of tree planting to provide a screen around the site, the trees are very young and will need years to mature to an effective height.  In any case, it might be argued by some that this screening is largely intended to be visual to offer a degree of visual protection for those approaching Hexham along the A69.  Furthermore this screening is at too low a level on the valley floor to be of any value to residents of Oakwood and Anick.

Increasingly, there is concern about the degree of light pollution to which the community is now subjected.

The Site Allocation proposals will affect many residents in Sandhoe.  The implication is that over 3.5 hectares of land have been proposed for future housing use within the parish boundaries.  At the rate of 30 dwellings per hectare, (Tynedale Council's own published formula), Tynedale's Planning Officer could sanction the building of over 100 new homes in the parish, 87 of which could be in Anick and Oakwood.  Since there are only just 101 dwellings in Anick and Oakwood, an additional 87 will be an immense strain on this rural infrastructure which has no shops, no post office, no buses, no community centre or village hall, no child or young people centred activities, narrow lanes and a school which is currently full to capacity.    If you'd like to read more, you will need to register and log in before you can select a topic from the links above or from the sub menu on the right.
