Egger at night prior to lighting reductions
August 2007

Following complaints from residents and action by Tynedale Council, Egger has substantially reduced the amount of routine night-time lighting of the plant. The lighting of the new plant was ill-considered in terms of its impact on the environment and after many complaints from residents to both Egger UK and to Tynedale Council, the council negotiated a reduced lighting plan with the chipboard manufacturer.  There is now a lower level of shielded lighting throughout the dark hours and task related lights are switched on only when there is work scheduled in a particular area.  We understand that all the lights will be automatically switched on when there is an emergency or an incident during the hours of darkness.

If you are affected by the amount of light generated by the Egger plant, please register your concern with Tynedale Council who are logging complaints.  The telephone number is 01434 652121.  Customer Services will take your call and will ensure that your comments are passed to the Environmental Health department.  If you wish to complain directly to Egger as well, you can phone them on 01434 602191.  It is best to do this at night (after the main switchboard has closed) because your call to this number will be taken by the gatehouse security team who log every call.  Alternatively, you may wish to email Paul Turner who is responsible for this function at Egger.  His email address is believed to be paul.turner@egger.com

It's understood that that Egger have responded to residents' complaints by stating that they will reconfigure the lighting so that it is only switched on when personnel are working in the area.  This should provide a significant improvement - watch this space!

The quantity of lighting used to externally illuminate the new factory is huge and surely cannot be justified even on grounds of health and safety.  The visual intrusion of this amount of light in a rural area is immense and inappropriate.
