Industry & Commerce

Sandhoe has a small cross section of agricultural, industrial and commercial organisations ranging from self-employed homeworkers to an international manufacturing company employing 400 people directly.

The presence of a large manufacturing industry in a rural market town is is bound to be contentious to some.  Egger UK Limited has its origins in Airscrew Weyrock, a chipboard manufacturing company, and has been located at Bridge End since the 1950s, taking advantage of the proximity of raw products in the North Northumberland forests.  In the interim the business has grown and in 2005 the company applied for permission to build a new factory on adjacent land which had been earmarked in the local district council's plan as building land for timber-related industries.  Despite opposition from residents in this parish and others, the plans were approved and in June 2007 testing and commissioning of the new plant began.
