The Rat

Originally believed to be a drovers' resting house in the 1750s, it was, in the 19th century called the Board Inn. Cattle, herded down from the Borders would have been rested overnight on or around Anick Green before being taken to Hexham Market to be sold.

About half a mile to the east of the Rat is the old drovers' road which extends the line of the Beaufront Woodhead road from the north. It's known as Clarty Lane and is easily identified by an avenue of trees that border it

Today the Rat is a typical country pub, serving excellent beers and good, home cooked food. It's equally popular with local residents and those who travel many miles to enjoy its unique atmosphere.
